When celebrating large holiday’s, both our families often include “the ham” to our tables. If you’ve never made a ham before, be prepared to meet your new “best friend” for large meals. Ham is economical and is so EASY to make!
Over the years, we’ve both trialed different holiday entree’s…from turkey to BBQ’d steak and even pizza! However, it seems ham is always the family favorite. It wins with all taste buds, young and old!
This recipe for baked ham with a root beer glaze is extraordinary. The addition of our root beer glaze sauce will definitely take it up a notch for the holidays. Both the ham and glaze require very little effort in the way of actual cooking; allowing you to have more time with your family or prepare side dishes.
To get started, simply place your ham in a large roaster or deep baking dish; add 1/4″ of water, cover and bake. A general rule is to bake at 325°F; about 15 minutes per pound. A cooked ham will have a minimal internal temperature of 145°F if you’re using a meat thermometer.
We wanted to make our ham extra special for Easter and added the apple cider to bake alongside the ham instead of just water. Go ahead and give this a try! This will make an incredibly moist and flavorful ham for Easter.
Side note**- Local YYC Lekker cider company makes an amazing cider. We love this addition to our baked hams…and of course for drinking! We encourage you to try them out, especially during these tough times of quarantine at home. However, if you can’t find them now (found in most Sobey’s liquor stores), go ahead and use any cider. If you love cider’s, put them on your bucket list aprés Covid for sure!
While your ham starts baking in the oven you can prepare the root beer glaze. Start this about 1 hour before your ham is finished.
In a saucepan on low heat, add all the ingredients for the glaze. Stirring well, cook until all the sugar’s have incorporated and begin to melt. Simmer the glaze until the sauce has reduced and thickened, approximately 45 minutes.
You’ll pour the reduced glaze over the ham for the last 15 minutes of baking. When your ham is finished baking, remove from the oven and using a baster, cover the ham again with glaze from the roasting dish.

Ingredients
A gluten-free spiral, bone-in ham (approximately 3.5kg – 4.0kg)
1 can gluten-free apple cider
- Ham Glaze
2 cups rootbeer
1 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp dijon mustard
2 tbsp grated ginger
Directions
- Preheat oven to 325°F
- Pour cider over ham, cover and begin baking in oven. (Approximately 15 minuter per pound)
- Start glaze 1 hour before ham is finished baking.
- Over low heat, add all glaze ingredients into saucepan. Stir well.
- Simmer sauce, stirring to dissolve sugars and reduce glaze into thick syrup. Approximately 45 min.
- Pour glaze over ham in oven for the last 15 minutes of baking.
- Upon ham finished baking, remove from oven. Using a baster, cover ham with glaze syrup.
- Slice and serve with your favorite sides,
